NaNoWriMo is coming

nanowrimo-300x184It’s almost November. Just a few short days and then… The writing happens *cue spooky music*

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is, for some like me, a sacred holiday. For one month – 30 days – I put writing first. It’s all about getting the new words on the page. It’s about letting my ideas drive me. It’s about putting aside the other responsibilities of life and living the life of a writer.

That might be a bit of an exaggeration.

It is a month to push the limits of creativity. It’s time to tell my inner editor to STFU and let me write. It’s time to tell my family and friends that writing is important to me. It’s time to get the stories that have been plaguing my day dreams out of the clouds and into the computer (where they will live in “the cloud” – how ironic).

It is also a time to show my students what I mean when I say “embrace the ugly” and “It’s not horrible until it’s still horrible next month.” I let my students see some of what I work on during NaNoWriMo. It’s about the only time I let anyone look at my raw drafts. It’s instructive, and for some reason, not embarrassing. Any other time of year and I’ll keep those raw drafts hidden away.

So here I am, preparing for a month of writing. I’ve got my files all set up. Characters have names (though they might change). I have notes about the world. I know the opening line. All I have to do now is get through these last couple of days and I’ll be off to the races.
